Perhaps by writing Adobe, and pointing out to them that the “P” in pdf
is for portable, and if you can’t get the reader on your platform.
Also, ask them how they substantiate their use of this (well understood)
terminology, when there are many platforms that they don’t support ?

You only can display and print PDF’s with the Acrobat Reader, but
there are many more feature in ‘ghostscript’ … such as converting PS
to PDF and v.v., create lots of graphic formats as output, not to
mention the support of almost all printers, I’ve ever used (you can
even still print graphics on a 9-pin IBM Graphics Printer  ).

I only need to display and print PDF’s
When i need to create PDF’s i use M$ Word/Visio + Adobe Acrobat and it works
perfect. But that’s another story…

but there are many more feature in ‘ghostscript’ …
such as converting PS to PDF and v.v.,

…so today Adobe Acrobat Reader under windows 2000 works perfect for me. It
just displays PDFs with good quality and same prints them on mine HP
LaserJet 2100. I believe that maybe some better tools are avaibale for this
tasks. But AAR already does it good for me so i just don’t need them and
don’t want to use them

Also, i don’t like/believe into free software targeted to commercial tasks.

if you have some example pdf files that work in acrobat reader but not
ghostscript, I’d like to know. I can forward this onto the developers
and I am sure they will welcome the opportunity to fix it.

Sure. If you’r interesting please check
ftp://194.149.227.98/work/images/gsv_aar Some pages arn’t rendered by GSV at
all, some rendered but quality could be a way better. Seems like GSV dosn’t
use TTF fonts at all :-/

Versions are: Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 and GSview 2.1. If frankly i’m not
sure if this is the latest version of GSV so maybe this problems have been
fixed in newer GSV.

I just downloaded 3 pdf files and one postscript file from your ftp site ,
I can view of them fine on my linux box with
[fliu@beta test]$ gv -v
gv 3.5.8
[fliu@beta test]$ gs --version
6.51
(both came as default with the redhat 7.2).

(I don’t know what are those big *.bmp files on your ftp site).

Maybe I didn’t read carefully page by page, line by line. Can you
tell me which pdf file, which page, which line you are having problems?
I will then confirm it again with my display.

fyi, those were ported and downloadable from qnxstart before it

Actually, at least one QNX4 Photon port of gs has been around for a long
time. I have a copy downloaded from QSSL (I’m pretty sure) ported by
Karsten Koffmann.
Date is Sept 99. I could e-mail it - it’s pretty big to attach here.
