Hello all,
Let’s suppose we, a commercial company, have some own designed product which
is running under QRTP. Of course it’s shipped to our end customers with
licensed QRTP version and was developed/built with licensed SE or PE tools.
That’s not a problem and licensing scheme/cost etc is well defined by QSS.
Now we want to allow all interested people to test this product without
buying it. Some cut down Demo version. Why not ?
From my point of view a quite good way to do it is to build a demo package
from our system and required software from QRTP NC distribution, create a
bootable CDROM ISO image and allow people to download it from our site for
free or maybe send a CDROM it upon request. So user can boot it and next
enter directly into our system and play with it. “Get [Burn] Boot Play”
scheme.
Quite handy and it’s like QRTP’s Momentics NC distribution at this moment.
The difference is that after the boot user enters our system instead of pwm.
The questions are:
- May we just get a NC verison, build a custom bootable ISO package and
distribute it for free ?
- If we may not do above, what kind of licensing schemes can be used for
alike product Demo Version distributions ?
Some moments to fix are:
- The full version of system is commercial but demo version is not i.e. it
is distributed for free.
- User enters our system but he’s not allowed to interact with OS itself.
It’s a design/security policy. So user cannot do anything more but boot and
play with our product as it’s supposed by full version of product but in
demo mode.
- Of course if required can give credits/info to the user about QRTP/QSS
with Copyrignt/Licensing etc agreements. But the product isn’t an
advertisement board so all excessive logos/infos etc. will be definitely cut
down. That’s a deeply specifical custom system.

I’m no expert but I think that it’s fairly clear that this application
wouldn’t fall under “Non-Commercial Use”. You’re not selling it but you’re
using it for advertising purposes. I would expect that you would have to
contact your sales rep about purchasing runtime licenses for distributing
the CD. On the bright side, I don’t believe run-times are overly expensive.
On the dark side, it may be that our sales people don’t want this kind of
distribution model to take place at all: generally a runtime is associated
with some physical piece of hardware.
Of course, as a developer, I’m completely unqualified to give you any advice
on this matter and it may very well be that the powers that be will say,
“Yes, go ahead…if your advertising will sell your product which will give
us runtime royalties, then great!” Either way, you need to talk to your
sales rep.
