Knowledge base

Don’t know who is responsible of the knowledge base but as I was looking
for informations about boot process, I found the following mistakes.

How to suppress bootloader message, “Press ESC for alternate OS…”

How to suppress bootloader message, “Press ESC for alternate OS…”

Answer Use:

dinit -b -h -m “My new message” /dev/hd1t77

CAUTION: dinit, used with different parameters will re-format the hard disk!

Also there is a ‘quiet’ version of the bootloader in the Contributed
Software section of our website at:

/usr/free/qnx4/os/utils/disk/quietloaders.tgz

I’m a little bit doubtful about that!

What is the question in fact?
To prevent the message or to prevent the boot loader to look for an
alternate boot and wait a while for an answer?

Today I have no aswer because I tried exactly this command on QNX 6.1.0a
and I still get the following message and wait state:

Hit Esc for .alboot…

After that, I found the following FAQ:

…/diskroot file for root not found on any filesystem

I just tried to install QNX RTP on my PC but when
it boots I get the following error message:

…/diskroot file for root not found on any filesystem
starting with safe mode
unable to start devc-con

Answer Make sure that your hard drive is set to Master on the Primary
IDE channel. If it is and you still get this message, during the boot
cycle run the full eide scan by pressing the spacebar for input options,
and than pressing F2.

According to my tests, that’s not all. It seems that no command, either
fdisk or dinit, write this file on the hd (/dev/hd1T77 for example) you
want to prepare.
So, when you start the machine where you plugged this hd, you get the
message.

About the faq Customizing QNX 6 Enumerators, the link specified in the
answer is not correct.

That’s all for today except that I didn’t found any information to
prepare a hd able to boot with a qfs file mounted!

Regards,
Alain.

Thanks Alain
We will update the knowledge base entry, as well as investigate adding another one to address your question.
