Floppy disks face extinction

"The death knell for the humble floppy drive may have been sounded, following Dell’s decision to stop installing them on all new PCs. "

What alternatives are there for the moment in QNX for the “humble fkoppy”?

Net, DVD-RAM… Probably, those Dell’s USB flash memory drives will also work with QNX’s USB stack?

I’ve seen quite a few MACs with ZIP disks and no floppies.

I like ZIP disks, but it’s kind of neat to be able to mail something to
someone that only cost you a nickle.

Most recent PC will support booting from CD. THe QNX4 and QNX6 CDs are
bootable.

There’s always ls-120’s … but I’m not sure on their future, either.

Iomega don’t seem to be doing themselves any favours what with 3 different
sizes of disk : 100, 250 & 750 Meg. Their internal/OEM drives have two
possible modes of operation, conventional IDE and a floppy emulation, both
of which are bootable using DOS formated disks. They get very confused if
you try to use the QNX filesystem. I speak from bitter experience.

Maybe QSSL will provide us with USB support for floppy drives and USB ZIP
drives??

Ever hopeful…
Jim

Can QNX4/QNX6 read/write DVD-RAM?

QNX6 can. As for QNX4 I don’t know but I would guess it does.

It’s time for QSSL to support CD/R and CD/RW writing.

The supported hardware list is definitely gettting more
than a bit too retro.

Why would you think that would change? This has always been the case with
all of QNX Oses. Gotta live with it.

Given QNX6 bulk of the revenue is apparently not comming from x86 sales,
(it’s unlikely a CD/RW will be hook up to a SH4) PC oriented devices will
IMHO not get that much attention from QSS.

QNX6 can. I doubt very much about QNX4. The support in QNX6 is
rudimentary so far - no UDF filesystem, no format utility, no way to set
write-protect flag. They essentially treat it as a CD that allows
writing in the same way as HD.

I think floppies will be eliminated when majority of CD drives will
support Mt-Rainier (aka CD-MRW), which is (more or less) an open
standard for packet-mode writing on CD-RW. It is anyone’s guess when QNX
will support that. If at all…

I’ve seen this for a few years now, Gateway was talking about it,
then someone else, Apple, now Dell, I really doubt that they will
completely disappear for a long time (much to my dismay).
