Phindows over serial port hangs

I have connected a NT4.0 machine to a QNX 4.25/Photon 1.13 computer with
serial cable and use Phindows to run Photon under NT. Everything works
well, but occasionally (it always happens within an hour) Phindows
“hangs” i.e. does not update its window any more. Phrelay on QNX machine
is still up, also Phindows is able to access its menu. When running
phrelay with logfile it displays Timeouts and NAK’s when sending objects
in that situation. When closing Phindows phrelay terminates and all open
vedit’s are closed correctly.

Phindows uses CRC and BPE encoding, but this is not important for the
hangup to occur. The serial port is set to 115200.

traceinfo shows:

2006 Serial port 03F8, Hangup
2010 Generate sighup (7045)

What more information can I provide to detect the reason for this
behaviour?

Sincerely

christian

Hi Rodney,

Yes, I’ve read both of them:

  1. The solution is not detailed enough for me. How do I start a TCP/IP over
serial on the NT machine? Which IP address should I use?

  2. As mentioned, phrelay shows timeout and NAK entries in the debug logfile
at the moment, the hangup occurs. Could the exact lines tell you more?

thanks
chris

I believe that you would need the Dial Up Networking files installed on the NT box. You would use the IP address of the Phindows Server. As for specific details, I’m sorry but I’ve never setup a serial connection that uses TCP/IP on an NT machine.

The reason that “phrelay” shows timeouts and NAK entries is because it has lost the connection to the NT box, probably because something on the NT side has fiddled with the serial port.

But how can it be then, that when closing the Phindows window on NT, phrelay on QNX machine gets notice and terminates the Photon session correctly. This implies for me, that is still has a connection when Phindows hangs.

I would like to know, what part of the system is “hanging”. Do you have any idea how to find out?
