Hello all,
Running QNX 4.25, Photon 1.13 with Phindows (whatever version comes
with this setup), I open a pterm window and if I press the “’” (single
quote) by itself or at the end of any command, my pterm goes into some
funky prompt “>” mode that I can’t get out of without pressing the “X”
button to kill the window. Does anyone know what this is? Can it
be disabled or is there another key stroke to get out of it? It is
very annoying since I often press the single quote key by mistake when
typing (if only I were a better typist!
Thanks,
Rob
You have the capability at the command prompt to stretch a string over
multiple lines. So if you type a ", but no closing quote, then the shell is
waiting for this closing quote, assuming that your command is not finished
yet. So it will prompt you with “>” to indicate the command is not finished
yet.
Same happens with ’ ,, and \ To get out of there, type another " ,', or

Just close the quote and the shell should return you to the default prompt
without killing the pterm. See shell prompts under the sh on-line help
documentation for an explanation of what is happening.
That’s the level 2 prompt of the shell. This is a shell issue. Another
single quote will terminate the level 2 prompt.
