A stupid question

Hi all;

My boss’s boss wants to know if there is any way to make an OPC client or
server run on QNX.

My word, and the word of my boss doesn’t seem to hold much weight, so I said
that I would post this question to Usenet just to be sure that someone
hasn’t gotten around to porting a major hunk of Microsoft Windows specific
code to QNX.

We are running QNX 4.25 and Photon 1.14

Nobody here has said as much yet, but I’m sure the next question will be: If
there is anything available, is it available as free ware? Freeware being a
common thing that Microsoft does and all.

Now: I can honestly say that I did post the question to Usenet. Thanks for
your time.

Hi Steve. I haven’t seen a general OPC implementation, though I know
that the OMNX team was working on one for their product quite a while
ago. We make a QNX4/QNX6/Linux <—> DDE product that will work fine
with most Windows programs, including virtually all of the HMI tools
and Visual Basic programs. Take a look at www.cogent.ca. Intouch
implements its OPC servers as DDE-to-OPC gateways, and then does all
of the actual work with DDE servers, so this isn’t completely
off-topic.

Cheers,
Andrew

I don’t think it’s a stupid question at all. We’ve also investigated this
issue. The sticky point is that the OPC clients and servers communicate with
each other using DCOM, which is not ported to QNX.

The configuration we’re wanting to use requires an OPC server on the QNX
box, with Windows OPC clients accessing it across Ethernet. The solutions
I’ve seen proposed normally include running the OPC server on a Windows box.
This server then accesses the QNX-based data with a proprietary socket-based
connection to the QNX box. Not an attractive approach, but perhaps the best
we’ll see in the short term.

With regard to the freeware issue, I’m not aware of anything that does this
that does not require a license fee.
