Version 4A oddities

After installing Version 1.14A over 1.14 I got curious
and removed my crt.1 trap file to let the system re-trap.
I have Dual Voodoo 3000 cards. Instead of picking the
Banshee driver, the Banshee90 driver was picked.
Does Banshee90 stand for Banshee rotated 90degrees?
Well in any case, that’s exactly what the driver did.

So my question is, is this some kind of bug that
Banshee 90 was picked? Could my somewhat unusual
configuration, 2 Voodoo cards, fooled the trapper
in some way?

Hi Mitchell,

We looked at the graphics information that you sent and
the Banshee90 is not present in your trap file - Have you
made modifications to the trap file?

The fact that you have two Voodoo cards shouldn’t matter. Both
Pg.Banshee and Pg.Banshee90 (rotated 90degrees) should trap.
If only Pg.Banshee90 trapped then this probably was a bug.
To the best of our knowledge this doesn’t occur with the very
latest release.

Yes I did. The Banshee90 stuff was of course not a tolerable
way to run my system and when I received your script I assumed
it was just going to query some hardware stuff. If you want
me to recreate the problem I will. That would mean re-trapping,
and running your script. Do you need that?

The fact that you have two Voodoo cards shouldn’t matter. Both
Pg.Banshee and Pg.Banshee90 (rotated 90degrees) should trap.
If only Pg.Banshee90 trapped then this probably was a bug.
To the best of our knowledge this doesn’t occur with the very
latest release.

Since I just updated to 1.14B shouldn’t I have the latest release?
If not, where can I get it to test for you?

The dates on your drivers indicate that you have installed from June 2000.
There were a couple of graphics patches (October and December) and also
a new release of an all products CD earlier this year (March).

For complicated reasons I had to delete and reload Photon subsquent to
finding the Banshee90 problem. In the process I ended up with the
drivers you noticed. Again I though you were just doing some kind
of hardware probe. I’ll load the patches you mentioned and see if
the problem repeats.

BTW, is there some reason that the web updates are uncompressed?

Little do I know when I followed your instructions that I would be
embarking on a 5 hour odessy of frustration and pain. The only
think I can think of that is comparable would be maybe trying to
install Win95 on a 486. Here is how it went.

In order to have some reasonable sense that what was being
installed was the correct versions, I started by completely
removing the existing Photon. This consisted of deleting all
/qnx4/photon, /qnx4/phtk, and /qnx4/graphics files. I also
went into the /registry directory and cleaned out photon related
files.

First Attempt

I have a relatively Old QNX CD-ROM, maybe 1999 or something.
I thought I would start out by installed with its
/cd0/bin/phinstall script. Once started it would hang after
putting up a 640x480 screen. It seemed like neither the
Mouse or Keyboard were initialized properly so this was out.
Without Photon running the /cd0/bin/pkginstall was useless
so I tried starting out as follows:

/etc/install -u phtk1.13.tar.F

I used 1.13 since I figured it would be easy to get rid of
once 1.14 was installed. It installed fine. I then ran
pkginstall from the CD-ROM and pointed it at my archives.
I went through many rounds of this procedure. I usually
got an error that /qnx4/photon/bin/phfonttiny was missing.
If I every tried restarting the install I got an error
that /qnx4/photon/help existed while trying to move from
/qnx4/photon/v1.14/help.

Occaisonally the system would lock up in the middle of the
install. I’m not sure what to make of this as my system
does this close to never.

When everything went to completion, I would exit Photon and
then try to restart and found that “ph” was not found.
Once I found it buried in /qnx4/photon/v1.14/bin and relinked
it only to find that crttrap was not found.

I eventually ran across a method that workd. I first would install

/etc/install -u phtk1.14.tar.F

BTW: I confirmed that when just this file is installed and
“ph” is run, the trap file is set to Pg.banshee90, not
Pg.banshee. This was easy to fix by editing the trap file.

I then used pkginstall to update from the archives. Finally
then I was ready for the moment of truth.

I first ran ph from a $ prompt. This might have been
a mistake. The output was as follows:

Running crttrap, please wait
/qnx4/graphics/trappers/Hydra.ms -T

At this point the computer was so frozen that CTRL-ALT-SHIFT
Delete did nothing. I reset and tried running again from
a Super User # prompt. This time many “trappers” lines
rolled passed the screen. The last three were for Pg.Banshee.
The last line was

/qnx4/graphics/trappers/Pg.Banshee -d0x121a,5 -T

At this point, once again, the computer was hard crashed.
I tried one more thing. I rebooted and copied my old
crt.1 file back. This time when I ran “ph” the screen
errupted in a spasm of flashing color.

I went back and re-installed

/etc/install -u phtk1.14.tar.F

over this and I’m now back to square one.

In conclusion, there are some problems with the installation.
There also seems to be a problem with the latest trapper
and driver files. The /updates/phrt1.14.tar.F and
/updates/phrt1.14A.tar.F seem to work fine except for
the trapper error.
