About 3 years ago we were going to use a touchscreen that Photon didn’t
support. Someone at QNX sent me an Input development kit (idk) at the time,
and I was going to write my own protocol-layer driver. We decided not to use
the touchscreen, so I put the idk away and forgot about it. The current
version of Photon at the time was 1.12, I believe.
I have now found the idk, and have written a preliminary driver for the SC4
protocol. I have yet to test it, since I don’t have a touchscreen handy, but
I’d like to know if this is likely to work with Photon 1.13 running under
QNX 4.25. I’d also like to know how to set a timer in the protocol layer, so
that I can time out packets. The prototype driver I was given (Smartset)
does not use any timers.
Thanks,
Kevin
Kevin,
I can’t answer your question, sorry, but I have a question of my own. At the
company I work for we were trying to get a driver for the SC4 but QNX said they
were no longer making new drivers for QNX4.25. We don’t have anyone currently
capable of making the driver with the idk. Would it be possible to get this
driver from you, I’m pretty sure the company would be willing to pay you. (I
would have to know how much though, and upon proof that it works of course)
Thanks in advance,

I have no idea what the official word is. No one I know got word about this
from
QNX aside you . For good reason, I don’t think QNX wants to tell QNX4
user
they are now stuck with an OS that’s going nowhere. I stay stuck because
porting to QNX4 is in many case impossible or involves lots of work. Some
companies
I know are in serious trouble because of this. I could go on , but then
we are not in the advocacy conference
\
Here is the official word that we the outside can see
http://www.qnx.com/products/os/qnx4support.html
It sounds dismal for QNX4.

Dismal is a harsh characterization for the position outlined in that
document. New drivers for QNX4 until the end of 2002, available custom
development of drivers after that. It is worth noting that PC hardware
has stabilized a great deal (with the exception of video cards) in the
last few years. If new drivers are being developed until the end of
next year, then QNX4 is a viable shipping platform until around 2005/6.
There is no question that QNX4 is going away, but IMO 5 years is a
reasonable time to make the transition.
The only exception that might need to be made is video drivers. There
will probably be a requirement to supply a few video drivers after 2002.

When you say porting to QNX4, do you not mean porting from QNX4? Because we are
planning to do this, and I am interested in your statement “porting to QNX4 is
in many case impossible or involves lots of work”
Is it that hard to change over from QNX4 to Neutrino or RTOS6?

Well, I have a basic driver up and running. Seems to work just fine. These
NFI screens are very nice; I wish we could have used them on some of our
other projects.

Kevin,
I was wondering, could you send me the driver, I would like to test it out and
see if I can get it to work.
