Photon font printing

I have recently started to use ‘ped’ to edit and print text documents. I
use a PostScript driven TI laser printer, I use ‘lpsrvr’ as my spooler,
and ‘Pp.ps’ to produce the PostScript.

I noticed that the font sizes as rendered on paper are much smaller than
you would expect. If I compare a ‘WordPerfect’ document with text in
'Courier 12 ’ printed on the same printer with a ‘ped’ document with
text in the same font, the letters, as printed out through ‘ped’ are
about half the size. I can’t find a scaling option for font printing
anywhere. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know how to get
Photon to print fonts at a realistic size?

Thanks, Camiel

Hi Camiel,

I have spoken to one of the developers and here is the info that he
passed on:

Yes the Pp.ps does reduce the type size. A work around for
this would be to change the default font in ped.
To do this, invoke ped and click on “options”. From the
options menu select “defaults”. Change the font and size,
choosing a size about 50% larger you require. Click on “save”.

Hope this helps
Regards
Brenda

I know that this problem could be fixed IF “ped” were to set the Pp_PC_SOURCE
SIZE in the printer context to 612x792, as I do in my own applications. Is
there any way to instruct “ped” to do this, or is it possible for me to get a
copy of the “ped” source code?
Thanks, Camiel.

Hi Camiel,

Unfortunately there is no way to set the printer context for ped and the
source code is not available.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that QNX aught to change "ped"s
default printing behaviour to that of any other word-processing-like text editor.
This is of course to ensure that the fonts and font sizes selected by the user are
rendered accurately when that text document is printed. A given font can never be
rendered accurately on a monitor screen, given all possible screen resolutions and
monitor sizes, but when it comes to printing there should no ambiguity. Why is
“ped” different? If an editor lets the user select fonts and font sizes, that is
usually so that the text will be printed accordingly.
Does anyone know of a simple word-processing program that runs under
QNX4/Photon1.1x which does print properly? The users affected by this problem are
some 50-100 fire inspection officers around Canada.

Hi Camiel,

There are other editors for QNX4 you can check them out at the following link:

http://quics.qnx.com/cgi-bin/dir_find.cgi?/usr/free/qnx4/os/utils/editors/

I don’t know if any will suit your purposes.
