Pete Paterson

I miss Pete Paterson, I miss Alec, I miss Igor, I miss Warren Peace and I
even miss the people I don`t like.

Good things there is still Robert and Bill to make things more lively!

Kris keeps it somewhat lively too but I`m guessing he is muzzled, like most
QSS staffer I assume. Gotta be politicaly correct ;-|

Seems like the human side of thing is slipping away, maybe it`s just me,
maybe I just need more sleep…

I have never felt muzzled by anyone. Even though I have been taken out
of context and had people think I was saying something I was not saying.
But then again, I wasn’t mentioned in your list of QNX staffers. :frowning:

And I have to agree with the other poster, the #qnx irc channel seems to be
much more alive with converstation. The newsgroups are becoming more and
more a support system. The advocacy group still kicks up some dust now and
again.

In many cases I prefer the offline nature of the newsgroups

The newsgroups are becoming more and

Indeed!

The advocacy group still kicks up some dust now and again.

I tough about bringing up some issues but felt it was like
talking in the wind. The people that could answer or do
something about it arent reading it apparently. Hence I dont see the point. Plus Im distancing myself from QSS as a company. Its obvious that in the grand scheme of thing
Im no longer a typical QSS customer nor are most of my customers. The closeness of the relationship I felt I had with QSS is slowly fading away. Im ok with that. In fact
it probably proves that QSS is gearing itself to play with
in the big leagues.

I stick around the community because of people
like Chris (there you go you`re name is in the list),
Thomas, Alain, David and many others. But it seems
there are less and less of these people. Again I understand
this, senoir staff must be assigned to high profile work.

mmmph…mmmph

You’re right though…nothing quite like an Igor/Pete/Warren/Armin induced
flame fest to keep things interesting around here. I’m thinking that things
just slowed down over the summer a bit. Igor seems to be back in fine form
now that vacations are over.

I’ve only been with QNX for a couple of years but I understand what you’re
saying. For a long time QNX was somewhat of a ‘family affair’. Everyone
knew everyone else, customers, staff and enthusiasts. Now, like you said,
we have to play with the big boys. The landscape is littered with the
corpses of companies that didn’t make the transition and if we’re going to
survive, we have to adapt and grow. That means becoming somewhat more
closed. We have marketing people who make the decisions about what
information is released and when. It used to be that people on the
newsgroups knew almost as much about the interal operations of the company
as we did.

Keep in mind though that there is still a human element. Many of the same
people are still here and are happy to talk with and help clients and
enthusiasts. Just because we’ve “put on a suit and tie”, so to speak,
doesn’t mean that we’re fundamentally different. The company is growing up
and it’s for the best. Many of you love QNX, both the people and the
product. If you would like us to be around and have a good chance of
getting involved in a project using our OS, then this is what has to happen.
Otherwise all your experience with us will go to waste and you’ll be
"wince"ing in pain  on your next project as you write code for some
nasty, ugly API.

We are in great position to be a significant player in quite a few markets
and there is going to be lots of work for experienced QNX people like
yourselves. So keep smiling and don’t worry. We’re not going away.

cheers,

Kris

Stop! You’re getting me all misty-eyed.

I’d planned to post a “Lights Out” for the first time in a few years
this past Christmas, but I found myself in a hotel room in Toronto with
no internet access.

These past few years I walk around the evening of the day before
Christmas Eve in my own company’s building (we give everyone Christmas
Eve off), shutting down the test inspection equipment, turning off the
lights and arming the alarm. But somehow it just isn’t the same, and
never can be again even if were to go back to QSSL (even if they’d take
me back!).

Now THAT’S family!

It sure was.

If you guys are going to get maudlin, I suggest you all meet in some piano
bar where some lounge lizard croons “Memories,” “Those Were the Days,” and
other such slop. Bring lots of handkerchiefs and weep yourselves silly.

Even if the good old days were as rosy as you say, you can’t go back.

There, now I sound like a hard-hearted curmudgeon.
