CompactPCI Devices

I am looking for hard drive devices for CompactPCI computers that
allow me to swap out hard drives just by pulling the cards.

The system we currently have has the IDE interface on the CPU
card and cables running inside the cPCI case to the hard drive
cards that DO NOT plug into the backplane. The defeats the
purpose of having field replacable system cards.

I’d be willing to have entire IDE and hard drive on one card as
long as it could be pulled and replaced by relatively untrained
field personel.

We do not even require hot swap capabilities. Just the ability
to have spare components in the field where they can be replacced
on a moments notice.

There are system boards that have transition modules that have (usually
optional) IDE driver on them. So you can replace the TM together with HD.
Another option would be to use a chassis with ‘drive bay’ that is connected
to IDE interface on the system board through backplane. Normally the 5.25"
drive bays can take swappable drive enclosures… we use one such system,
although it is SCSI, not IDE. The SCSI solutions are more common in this
area, simply because they tend to have better MTBF and are more hot-swap
friendly.
