unable to boot

Hi i just purchased qnx2 and I inserted the floppy as stated in the
documentation and the machine only gives a black screen. There is no prompt
as I was told I would get in the documentation to type qnz as a new user and
then install.Everything I type stays on this black screen and nothing else
happens. Any ideas?

What sort of hardware are you trying to boot this on? (QNX2 is quite an
old OS, it won’t support or boot/run properly on anything much faster than
a 100 Mhz Pentium, it requires a traditional floppy controller, not an
LS-120, it doesn’t understand EIDE or LBA, etc.)

Well i started off on a PIII700 which seems a lost cause. The system I am
working on now ran qnx for several years until the hard drive failed. This is
why am in the current situation.I have a new hard drive in it now and am
trying to work from there but the install still seems to hang up even when I
get the very end and it asks me to remove the floppy and hit control alt
shift delete. The machine does not reboot and appears to lock up.Upon
restarting the machine also freezes up so I am at that point currently.Id
like to get the system running to install my 3rd party programs and just fix
up/replace some old parts to get it back out in the field and off my bench.

you will want to get an older hdisk that doesn’t use lba, or that can
be configured from your machines bios to not use lba mode.
some of the bios’s in the older machines let you force lba mode to off
(disable)… i have an older P133 that i use in this way with qnx2.

qnx2 was developed in 85. and it was effectively frozen around 1993. it is
still a very usable OS but it has not been brought forward with new hardware.
… you could liken it to DOS 2.0 or earlier…

I turned off LBA and made the computer think the hard drive is much smaller.
Before I did that the boot disk wouldnt even boot.I now can at least fully
install and by choosing a DOS boot instead of the qnx loader the shift
control alt delete now reboots the machine after the install, but when I
reboot to run qnx for the first time the system hangs after it says “booting
partition 1” with an arrow under it.

what is likely happening is that your disk boot is getting different values
for # of heads and # of sectors/track than when you boot from floppy.
when you boot from floppy and run the fdisk program and it displays the
heads, tracks and sectors/track values, these must be the same values
(heads and sectors/track at a minimum) that your bios is programmed to.

you will likely want to check this from both fdisk and your cmos/bios…

Thanks for the information it would appear that my hard drive was too large
and even by forcing the values into the cmos and the qnx program it would
not install properly.I have since installed it on a smaller hard drive which
seems to have installed properly. Thanks to all who helped. Now its on to my
next problems so I guess ill start a new thread.
