emergency recovery of my system

I have 3 computers running QNX 2.x with arcnet. These computers have only a
hard drive and a floppy drive installed. What I’d like to do is but a CD
Burner on the parallel port and make an image of my hard drive for emergency
recovery. Then I would like to be able to boot from a floppy and restore
this image to a new hard drive.

For windows the software to do this is readily available, but I have found
nothing for QNX systems. Does anyone have information on how this can be
done?

Hi Jim,

You may have to find a slightly more complicated way!

None of the QNXes (2, 4, or 6) have support for CD Burners yet.
(and the internals of this are not simple!, I know, I have had a preliminary
look at the possibility of doing it myself)

You may have to transfer the data over another medium (a serial link??) to a
system that can burn the data onto the CD.

I am not sure if this would work either, but given the parameters you have
mentioned, I think that that is the direction I would first use to try and
work out this problem.

There may be some other backup solutions for QNX2, but even something like a
duplicate HD that you can copy the original to from time to time might be a
more feasible solution.

As mentioned, you might be able to do this all from another OS. There
is a big pitfall as copying the image back to a different hard disk
you will probably not have a bootable drive.

I sell a QNX 2 parallel port driver that works with Zip 100,
Zip 250, and I believe Jaz 1Gig and 2Gig drives using the
“Jaz Traveller”. You can email me for more info.

Here’s a thought.

Boot some other OS. Mount

Here’s a thought.

Boot some other OS. Mount your hard drive. You can then backup the entire
partition as a block special file.

Or if you can boot QNX 4 you can use Qnx2fsys to mount your QNX 2 file
system and selectivly backup the files that you want to back up.

I have been successful on restoring my system by using Norton ghost.
Take a complete sector by sector Image of your complete disk by using a
serial or parallel cable from a DOS machine running Norton ghost to your Qnx
machine booted up from a Norton ghost boot floppy.
My Image file is 330 MB, although the actual data is about 25 MB.
You will need to reboot with your boot disk and run through the install
procedure, but do “not” say yes to the dinit 3 +hard command.
Skip through that section and you should be able to rebuild the boot image.
You can contact me for further questions if you like.
