Hello,
Sound output works fine with the ESS1938 driver, but I’m not getting
any sound input either through line-in or mic-in.
Anyone have any similar problems? It won’t work via the photon
sound recorder either.

As far as I remember (6.1 ddk sources) Solo1 driver doesn’t contain input
switchers, it uses capture from mixer source only (according to old sources
from 6.1 DDK, maybe new driver from 6.2 is better).
