CD Writer

Can anyone tell me if QNX 6.1 support CD Writers? If yes, which burning
program has been ported?
Thanks - Serge

No, 6.1 does not support CD Writers.

Thx Chris! Any idea if/when this may happen? As of today it seems that only
Zip drives can be used to backup data. CDwriters would really be a good
altenative.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the note about a QNX port underway has been
there for about three years. It’s probably for QNX4, though I haven’t seen
one. The page hasn’t changed much for quite some time now (I think it was
almost a year ago).

I must say that I am very surprised that no Company using QNX on their
automated systems, such as medical devices, has ever been interested in
porting a CD writer driver on this OS. I wonder what storage device are used

I heard that because of this my company will move from QNX4 to W2K . Sad…

That’s pretty lame. If someone absolutely needs to write CD, then get a

dedicated Windoze machine and network it to your QNX network. Then write to
the CD through that Winblows machine.

On the other hand, there are many other backup mediums availablle besides
CD.

You must be kidding. Suppose you’re going to ship a product which needs
backup/logging/billing to reliable removable media. You will add that
Winblows PC to your shipping list? Or you will expect customer to set up
that? How you going to support it?

What don’t you name a few? Tapes are NOT supported by QNX6. ZIP is not
serious. MO solutions are VERY expensive. About the only acceptable way is
DVD-RAM, but it is VERY slow because there is no suitable filesystem (like
UDF) available. Plus, you can’t read DVD-RAM easily everywhere, so it is not
good for all purposes.

Why windows?
You can use Linux. I use cdwriter on Linux and I think
mkisofs and cdrecord is easy to use that “easy CD creaton on windows”
This command line utility.

And also I can put on CD not only isofs file system.

That’s what we do:

  • create a ISO-image on the QNX-side with ‘mkisofs’
  • FTP it to a Linux box
  • ‘rsh’ the cdrecord-command

Very reliable since 2 years …

Igor, what do you mean Tapes are not supported in QNX6?
I know I once connected a scsi backup drive to my QNX4 computer and then made a
tiny script to archive the files onto the tape. Every day it would backup the
files that had changed and once a week make a full backup, I can’t say it was
very good for getting individual files from backup, but it was good enough as a
backup of the whole system if something went seriously wrong.
Can anyone tell me why this would not be possible in QNX6?

some moments ago i compiled and installed one of the latest version
(1.11a14) of cdrecord without any errors … but i couldn’t test this nice

Support for tapes is an oddball because it does not fit well into either
block or stream model (that’s what QNX people told me). They somehow hacked
in tape support for QNX4, but for QNX6 the did not bother. Basically,
drivers will see the tape drive on SCSI/IDE bus, but they won’t create
device for it. It can be done using SCSI pass-through, but that is not
documented or officially supported/recommented.

Don’t be so sure, I needed a driver for a touchscreen once, had
confirmation from 3Com that they would pay QNX to make the driver, and
yet QNX wouldn’t return their calls. Thinking it was a mistake, I called
someone at QNX myself and they said they wouldn’t do it, even knowing
that 3Com would pay for it, maybe it just wasn’t enough money.
