When I saw this post on an OSNews forum I understood why there wasn’t much
community interest in actually doing the port. I wouldn’t want to do
it either…Let’s hope that Gobe is easier

I can tell you right now, that there WILL be a port of OpenOffice.org to
Silicon Graphics’ IRIX. And that I’m working on it right now!
Actually, I’m writing the bridge, which is a horrible horrible part of
the office, and for a number of good reasons takes a long time and has
to be written in a mixture of C++, assembly and machine code.

BTW: Abiword is what I’m using now, and except for the shoddy MS .doc format
support it pretty much handles everything I need.

According to this story at OSNews, the Gobe Productive office suite
(> http://www.gobe.com/products/productive/gobeproductive.html> )
is being released under the GPL.

This is a great office suite and would be perfect for QNX. Is there
anyone who might be interested in doing a native port? I’m not a
programmer but I would be interested in contributing some cash!
If/When this becomes available I will contribute some home
development cycles to this effort.
Yep - and there are a pile of other people interested in helping as well.
The discussion will probably heat up more when all the legal-eez is hashed
out and a firm date for source release is made. >
Makes me wonder why it is so much more interesting than
StarOffice/OpenOffice which had source available for quite long time >
Have you ever looked at what it took to build OpenOffice? Man
that was a big beheamoth nightmare. Didn’t even want to think
about starting a porting effort on that.
I’m hoping the Gobe made things nice, clean and modular.
