qPaq project

Hello all (or at least a subset of all),

what is, or will be, the official status of the qPaq
project?

Is it a QSSL supported project?
Is it an QSSL endorsed project?
Is it a demo project, without further meaning than just a show-off?

This project really needs user space momentum, and I’m willing
to invest (time) in it, but vagueness is never good (think Amiga).

Leon.

Is it a QSSL supported project?
Is it an QSSL endorsed project?

Yes to both.

Is it a demo project, without further meaning than just a show-off?

No. It will be treated as a “reference” platform.

Details are to follow - I just don’t know when.

What are then the big differences between 38xx and the earlier 3[167]xx
series ?

The units are looking very similar.

And from the technical specs I only can see different display resolution,

USB and BlueTooth.

No. The 38xx series might as well have been called something

besides an iPaq. It is nothing at all like the original

37xx, 36xx, and 31xx series. The only things that are the

same are the core CPU and the brand name. It will eventually

be supported.

Is the OS loading procedure also valid for the iPaq3870 ?

All of the support chips have been changed. So while functionally the units
are very much the same, technologically they are totally different. In the
original iPaq there where three main parts: the SA1110 (CPU), a bank of
general purpose IOs, and an 8bit micro attached to the SA1110 via one of
the uarts. The 38xx series has several custom made ASICs (that are
full of bugs and assumptions) to replace the simple 8bit micro. This
basically means that it is a whole new device with lots of headache to
get everything right.

The guys over at Compaq Research that maintain and develop the Linux
kernel on the iPaq started working on 38xx support back in Novemeber and are
just starting to have stable support now. Since I cannot call the ipaq
product engineers to find out why things aren’t working, I am letting the
Compaq Research guys figure out the hardware bugs/assumptions first.
