Re-activating my QNX parition

Hello there,

I have just installed QXN on my system after completely formatting my
main hard drive and splitting it into 2 partitions. 1 partition is of 9 gig
and it contains QNX, which was installed first. I then installed Windows XP
on the other partition, during the XP install I was informed that I could
re-activate my QNX partition and use the boot loader from that, nice I
thought. But unfortunatly I don’t seem to be able to activate it, the
option is just not there as it is with my other drive/partitions etc. Has
anyone got any idea on how I can use QNX as my primary OS without having to
re-install, as I had just started to enjoy using it and only installed XP as
a necessity. Thanks in advance and also could a boot floppy enable me to
access it?

Nick.

You have a few choices:

  1. Use the QNX install CD as a boot disk. There’s an option to run QNX
from your hard drive instead of doing an install.

  2. Boot the QNX install CD, choose to run QNX from the CD. Open a pterm
    and type:

dloader /dev/hd0 pc1

This will install the QNX boot loader that will let you boot either QNX
or XP.

  1. Download and install your favourite bootloader (LILO, Grub, etc…).

Just so there’s no misunderstanding, those are choices 1, 2, 3. Not
step 1, 2, 3. I’d personally recommend choice number 2:

  1. Boot the QNX install CD, choose to run QNX from the CD. From a
    terminal type:

dloader /dev/hd0 pc1

As far as installing your favourite 3rd-party boot, it doesn’t sound
like you have one, so it may not apply here. If do have one, you’ll have
to read the manual and/or be very creative.

For example, I’ve used OS-BS for a long time
(http://www.prz.tu-berlin.de/~wolf/os-bs.html). To install that, I’d dig
up an old DOS boot floppy, download and unzip the files from XP onto the
floppy, boot and install.

Daryl,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I shall do that, when you say download my
favourite boot loader, do I do this in XP or QNX? And sorry to sound really
stupid but how would I install it in QNX? Ive just got the hang of the
package manager > :frowning:

By the way, would you be the person that I would ask If I would like to know
how to get my Sound Blaster Live and my Geforce4 ti46000 working in QNX? I
have to disable audio drivers to be able to load QNX, so I expect this will
cause issues. Sorry if I’m hastling you, I have never actually got this far
with QNX before without destroying my pc with “Partition magic” damn thing.

Good thing I didn’t mention Partition Magic as a possible favourite boot
loader

With the GeForce, I’m assuming you’ve got it at least working in VESA
mode. Unfortunately, I’m not sure about SB Live or GeForce support. My
machine at home uses a RADEON (supported) and a SantaCruz (not
supported). So I never bothered.

Good Luck.
