QNX and VmWare

Is it possible and have to start Photon if SVGA (1024x768x16) mode under
VMWare.

Thanks

I spent some time working with VMWare and had very limited success.
Apparently VMWare does many funky things and, as such, has to create custom
configurations for various operating systems. We don’t have any such
arrangement with VMWare at this time so the best you can do is the
following:

  • Boot up the CD into VMWare and make sure you hit to enter extra
    boot options.
  • Select safe modes. I haven’t done this for a while but I believe as long
as you don’t start Photon, you’ll be alright.
  • You should now have a basic running Neutrino image (maybe, if you’re
lucky) and, if you’ve got networking setup properly, you should have a
    network connection.
  • Now you should be able to deal with non-photon apps at least, including
debugging and connecting with the IDE.

Caveats:

  • Your mileage may vary. Some machines it comes up on fairly consistently,
some it doesn’t. Some might succeed in booting up 2 or 3 times out of 5,
some more, some less. Like I said, it’s very flaky.
  • Don’t try to use Photon and don’t try to do things with the Hard Drive.
You’ll be able to dinit and mount the hard drive after booting up like this
but if you do, you’ll never boot that image again. Various DMA issues will
    cause the VM to crash.
  • If you like, you can make a bootable floppy image and boot VMWare directly
    from that.

cheers,

Kris
