Yet another QNX newbie

Hello!

After testing QNX with the “F2”-Mode im want to install it on me HD.
Currently I´m using following OS´s:
1.Windows2000 (from MBR, primary)
2.Windows98 (from MBR, primary)
3.Linux (from bootdisk, extended)
4.BeOS (from bootdisk, within WIN98-Partition)

The first thing to do is to make an empty primary partition (with Partition
Magic
or whatever). Is that right?

I read in a Forum that QNX overwrittes MBR without asking. I also read that
I need
a bootdisk for QNX if I have a NTFS-Partition on my HD.
What happens in my Case, NTFS, FAT32 and ext2 - Partitions?

Is there a posibilty to prevent any entry in the MBR by QNX?
(I hate MBR overwritting!!)

I´m afraid to loose access to all stored information and my OS´s and to
loose
WIN2000 would cause big problems to me.

What happens with the MBR after an uninstallation of QNX?

(As you can see, I don´t know much about MBR)

Thanks for information

Alex

That would be the best way. You can also install it into your windows 98
partition.

QNX could be installed on it’s own partition, into a FAT32 file system, or
NTFS. Only if you installed QNX into NTFS (your windows 2000) partition,
then you will need a flooppy to boot QNX.

If you choose install into Windows98 partition, you will not need any
special
MBR. Boot into your Windows98 as usual, only before it enter windows 98,
it will pop a menu to let you choose continue into win98 or QNX.

If you choose install QNX into it’s own partition. You would like NEED QNX
MBR. Otherwise, you can’t boot the new partition. (Unless you know how to
modify boot.ini in your windows2000 C:\

I don’t remember if the installer give you an option NOT TO install a MBR
(I think there is one). In a event that QNX over write your MBR, you can
always restore it with DOS (Winodws98) command “fdisk /mbr”. Yes, keep
a bootable win98 floppy and fdisk.exe on it is a good idea.

Is there a posibilty to prevent any entry in the MBR by QNX?

I think so.

What happens with the MBR after an uninstallation of QNX?

As describe above, it depends. Anyway, you can use “fdisk /mbr”
to restore “Microsoft Standard” MBR.

Well, I´m going to try it

Thanks you, xtang

Hi,
I’m not sure if it is possible install QNX to NTFS partition, I guess that
not.
I think in all cases you can choose install QNX bootloader to floppy.
Process with keeped ntloader and editing boot.ini is not quit easy. And from
my other discussion its not possible have got ntloader as loader and
together QNX installed on FAT partition instead of its own QNX parttition.
If somebody know how to do this pls let me know.

??? Well you can probably install on NTFS but you will not be able to make
any use of it. Partition has to be FAT32
