booting from cd-image on disk

hallo,

does someone know whether and how it is possible to boot from the qnxnc621
iso-image
if not burned on cd but saved on disk ? It should work with floppy images
and the lilo boot
loader (with /etc/lilo.conf : other=/dev/floppyimage label=image ), so why
not with the iso-image ?
when I try to install lilo with an according lilo.conf entry pointing to a
partition to which I raw-copied
the iso-image lilo says that no boot signature has been found on that
device.

thanks, manuel

If

  • the bootloader knows about the filesystem which the image is stored, and
  • the bootloader knows about how to extract the boot record from the image, and
  • the bootloader knows how to fool the BIOS to redirect floppy access to
    the image,
(for real bootable CDs, the BIOS itself redirects floppy access to real CD)

you can directly boot from iso image file.
LILO can’t.

Maybe some overblown GRUB can do it, as someone had posted a
ISO9660 patch for it on grub mailling list some time ago.

I also doubt LILO can boot a floppy image file…
Hmm, the LILO README says

LILO can boot the following types of images:

  • kernel images from a file.
  • kernel images from a block device. (E.g. a floppy disk.)
  • the boot sector of some other operating system.

which means you can’t use floppy-image or iso-image.

hallo,

hello,

If you want to install/upgrade QNX without burning CD you can do it manually. Probably it worth to
read short article at http://www.openqnx.com/Article185.html

eduard.

P.S. Of course, if you’re new to QNX, your better choice would be burn CD and install it as it
officially supposed to be.
