Network Problems.

Hello,
I’m having a problem with my network, it goes something like this:

Systems using QNX 4.25 Patch G.

3 Network drivers being used.
Net.fd and an in house Wireless Network driver (Air350) [Main Network]
Net.ether1000 [AUX Network]
Net.ether82557 [Backup Network]

The Net.fd and Net.ether1000 cards are both PCMCIA cards.
The Net.ether82557 is an on board device.

OK, now the problem, All the drivers are started successfully, we are
able to mount a windows share, ping the network etc, using the Net.fd
driver (Air350)

The AUX network (Net.ether1000) is dedicated to communicate with a
TCP/IP device, that is not always powered-up. Now if I attempt to create
a socket connection to this device while it is NOT there, for some
reason after 50 attempts this blocks access to the Main Network (Net.fd
/ Air350). By block I mean unable to ping the network, access network
share etc…

The only way I can gain access to the Main network again is by slaying
Net.ether1000. When i do this the Main network is then immediately
available.

This must be something to do with Net.ether1000 as I have also attempted
to recreate this using the backup Network Device (Net.ether82557) and
this has no problem. It would seem that somehow Net.ether1000 is locking
the network.

I have added my Network startup script below as well as the output from
sin when the Network is in an unreachable state.

Hopefully it is something i am doing wrong so i can fix it straight away.

Why are you using the timer interrupt for the Net.ether1000 driver (-i0)?
Have you just tried starting the Net.ether1000 driver with just the -p -i
and -l options only?

Hello,
I’m having a problem with my network, it goes something like this:

Systems using QNX 4.25 Patch G.

3 Network drivers being used.
Net.fd and an in house Wireless Network driver (Air350) [Main Network]
Net.ether1000 [AUX Network]
Net.ether82557 [Backup Network]

The Net.fd and Net.ether1000 cards are both PCMCIA cards.
The Net.ether82557 is an on board device.

OK, now the problem, All the drivers are started successfully, we are
able to mount a windows share, ping the network etc, using the Net.fd
driver (Air350)

The AUX network (Net.ether1000) is dedicated to communicate with a
TCP/IP device, that is not always powered-up. Now if I attempt to create
a socket connection to this device while it is NOT there, for some
reason after 50 attempts this blocks access to the Main Network (Net.fd
/ Air350). By block I mean unable to ping the network, access network
share etc…

The only way I can gain access to the Main network again is by slaying
Net.ether1000. When i do this the Main network is then immediately
available.

This must be something to do with Net.ether1000 as I have also attempted
to recreate this using the backup Network Device (Net.ether82557) and
this has no problem. It would seem that somehow Net.ether1000 is locking
the network.

I have added my Network startup script below as well as the output from
sin when the Network is in an unreachable state.

Hopefully it is something i am doing wrong so i can fix it straight away.

I very much doubt the driver used interrupt 0 on its own. What makes you
say that?

If it locks up, its either a defective card or its IRQ conflict with another
device. The port and interrupt should be as reported by pin and again I
very much doubt PCMCIA.generic allocated interupt 0 for the network card!

Hello,
I’m having a problem with my network, it goes something like this:

Systems using QNX 4.25 Patch G.

3 Network drivers being used.
Net.fd and an in house Wireless Network driver (Air350) [Main Network]
Net.ether1000 [AUX Network]
Net.ether82557 [Backup Network]

The Net.fd and Net.ether1000 cards are both PCMCIA cards.
The Net.ether82557 is an on board device.

OK, now the problem, All the drivers are started successfully, we are
able to mount a windows share, ping the network etc, using the Net.fd
driver (Air350)

The AUX network (Net.ether1000) is dedicated to communicate with a
TCP/IP device, that is not always powered-up. Now if I attempt to create
a socket connection to this device while it is NOT there, for some
reason after 50 attempts this blocks access to the Main Network (Net.fd
/ Air350). By block I mean unable to ping the network, access network
share etc…

The only way I can gain access to the Main network again is by slaying
Net.ether1000. When i do this the Main network is then immediately
available.

This must be something to do with Net.ether1000 as I have also attempted
to recreate this using the backup Network Device (Net.ether82557) and
this has no problem. It would seem that somehow Net.ether1000 is locking
the network.

I have added my Network startup script below as well as the output from
sin when the Network is in an unreachable state.

Hopefully it is something i am doing wrong so i can fix it straight
away.

Well IRQ 0 is not a good interrupt to use. What does ‘pin’ report. What do
you have in your /etc/config/pcmcia.cfg file?

If I remove all the options apart from the -p -l options it locks the
network up from start. When I run the ether1000 driver in verbose mode
using these minimal options I get the following scrolled down the
screen: “Addr Prom 00e098 7150d7”

If i remove the -i0 but keep the other options I am using, Net.ether1000
is unable to detect an IRQ so will use 0 anyway. This works fine if the
Network is reachable, it only seems to lock up if i ping an address that
is not there on it’s network.

Hello,
I’m having a problem with my network, it goes something like this:

Systems using QNX 4.25 Patch G.

3 Network drivers being used.
Net.fd and an in house Wireless Network driver (Air350) [Main Network]
Net.ether1000 [AUX Network]
Net.ether82557 [Backup Network]

The Net.fd and Net.ether1000 cards are both PCMCIA cards.
The Net.ether82557 is an on board device.

OK, now the problem, All the drivers are started successfully, we are
able to mount a windows share, ping the network etc, using the Net.fd
driver (Air350)

The AUX network (Net.ether1000) is dedicated to communicate with a
TCP/IP device, that is not always powered-up. Now if I attempt to create
a socket connection to this device while it is NOT there, for some
reason after 50 attempts this blocks access to the Main Network (Net.fd
/ Air350). By block I mean unable to ping the network, access network
share etc…

The only way I can gain access to the Main network again is by slaying
Net.ether1000. When i do this the Main network is then immediately
available.

This must be something to do with Net.ether1000 as I have also attempted
to recreate this using the backup Network Device (Net.ether82557) and
this has no problem. It would seem that somehow Net.ether1000 is locking
the network.

I have added my Network startup script below as well as the output from
sin when the Network is in an unreachable state.

Hopefully it is something i am doing wrong so i can fix it straight
away.

When you say that the device attached to the Net.ether1000 driver “is NOT
there”, is it directly connected to the PCMCIA device, or is it connected
via a hub/switch? What could be happening to the Net.ether1000 device is
that it is buffering messages and not transmitting them, due to a “no link”
condition, whereas the 82557 device will transmit regardless of a link or no
link.

The transmitter will reset itself if it detects that it has hung. This
normally happens after 150-200ms, but you have overridden this on the
command line with -h50000. I’m not sure what happens to TCP/IP packets, but
FLEET packets will timeout and be returned to Net.

If I remove the -h and other options, when I attempt to ping the none
existent device this brings down the entire network from startup.

If I run the Net.ether1000 driver in verbose mode in this situation I
get the following scrolled down the screen:

Addr Prom … 00e098 7150d7"

This appears to completely kill my entire network connection.

Other things that I have tried to get around this:

If the connection fails kill the Net.ether1000 driver, and restart it.
This works for 100 restarts, after this the network is again dead.

ifconfig en2 down
slay Net.ether1000
Net.ether1000 -p280 -l2&
]

If the connection fails alias the Net.ether1000 adapter with the address
of the unconnected device, perform a successfully ping then un-alias the
address. Again this works but this time for 45 failed connection attempts.

[
ifconfig en2 alias 10.0.0.1
ping -c1 10.0.0.1
ifconfig en2 -alias
]

As you can see I am now running out of ideas on how to solve this, if
you have any further ideas then please let me know.

Yes, this happens when the network card is reset, so it would slow down the
network. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about the hardware. The
only way to resolve this situation is to have the link up on the Ether1000
network card. A cheap hub/switch would solve the problem. The Ether1000
adapter would then transmit the messages and would not require the reset.

If there is some limit of only trying something 100 times, then after
100 times also slay Net and restart it.

hand held unit, so there is no way i can squeeze a hub inside them.

As I said before, this is a problem with the NE2000 chip and not the driver.
The driver has no way of knowing whether there is a link or not with this
chipset. The newer 10/100 chipsets have a PHY that you can probe to tell
whether there is a link or not. There is no way with the NE2000 chipset that
you can probe the link status before transmitting a packet.

into my head). My solution of slaying the Net.ether1000 driver on a
connection failure and restarting it seems to do the trick, with the

drivers are not being unregistered from the Net process.

Not that this is related to your problem, but you should slay Tcpip
and any other clients of the Net drivers before the network drivers.

It was definatley Net using all system timers, as the output from “sin rt”
showed loads of timers for the Net process. The “osinfo” app showed
the system timers going up everytime the Net.ether1000 driver was being
slayed and restarted.

As I’m not currently at work I can not post the output from “sin rt” but
will do so first thing Monday morning if required.
