Video not working on Dell Inspiron with ATI Rage 128

I’m trying to get Photon working again on a Dell Inspiron 4000
laptop after a motherboard change and subsequent reinstallation.
This used to work in 1024x768 but I can’t get anything higher than
safe mode working now.

Platform: Dell Inspiron 4000 notebook with ATI Rage Mobility 128 video.

QNX 4.25 with Photon runtime 1.14B (patched through 1.14C)

Starting in safe mode works but attempts to use any higher resolution
or more colors results in a blotchy unusable screen with icons being
the wrong color and located seemingly randomly on the screen. Exiting to
text mode causes the text to be screwed up with newly typed characters
showing up on lines other than where the cursor is located. The touchpad
pointer didn’t work initially but I was able to get that working by making
a customized input.4 file.

There is a Rage128 driver for QNX4, but you will need to get
the latest graphics updates.

Have you tried the flat driver in 1024x768? For example make the
following line the top of your trap file:

-HNqnx/crt -g1024x768x16 -A0xF8000000,0x800000 -WB2048;

the Mobility M3 in your system was not added until later.

You should try to get the latest QNX4 graphics drivers and trappers. You
shouldn’t need to update your entire OS. Check with your sales rep on getting
these latest graphics updates.

Dell changed the motherboard and I had to reinstall (long story) but I
remember it took several rounds with Pete Patterson to get it working
before. Installing the upgrades is probably easier.

Since several downloaded upgrades and one CD upgrade had been installed over
the original floppy version installation I thought I might be sufferering
from versionitis. So I uninstalled all photon components and reinstalled
ONLY from the July 2003 CD. This seemed to work! I don’t know why upgrading
from the CD didn’t work, but who am I to argue with success? The rage128
video is working superbly now.
