I know that an editor is a very personal thing and everyone has their
own favorite. For all of the great features that QNX6 has, I have
never found an editor that I liked nearly as much as vedit.
I won’t go into all of the reasons why vedit is so great. It just is.
Well, I finally have vedit working unsder QNX6. Kind of.
We had to get SMBD running here for another project. We needed to read
the QNX file system from Windows boxes. The instant we got that up
and running, this fantastic idea poped into my head.
I can stick an old QNX4 CPU on the network. It’s running SMBfsys and
is a client to the QNX6 box. It is also running inetd and can host
telnet sessions. So now, from my QNX6 desktop I can telnet into a QNX
4 host and run vedit on files that reside on the QNX6 file system.
There’s an added benefit to this approach. It also gets me Steve J’s
EZFM program back. I don’t care what anyone says, QNX does not have
anything as useful and efficient as EZFM for roaming around the file
system.
So, for those of you who really want vedit back, it’s a fair amount of
work but it can be done.
I missed what this fantastic idea had to do with SMB? If you wanted to run
vedit all you need is to export your QNX filesystem through NFS and telnet
to a QNX4 box… It is not a fair amount of work really.
Now, since you have SMBD set up, you might as well run MS Word. And Windows
Explorer too, LOL.

QNX4 distribution. What happened with all versions of vedit for the unix
like enviroments ? Many ppl have used vedit under QNX4 OS during eight
years and when QNX v6.x is out in 2000 they really miss it > > And still

Sorry, but we no longer support QNX and have no plans to do so.
Since 95% of the source is used in our current Windows version,
we are not willing to make it open source.

It is not just 3rd party suppliers. Most organisations who try to engage in
some kind of ‘partnership’ with QNX develop a distinct allergy to that name
within few months. There can be any number of theories to explain this… my
theory is that QNX sales/marketing/support approach appears to be geared
toward ‘one shot’ deals.
They get you to sign a paper that states what they are supposed to do and
they do it… But if you were uncareful to imply even most obvious and
logical things, you’re SOL. That won’t be delivered and will be charged
extra if you ask. Anything that will be delivered, will be tied up to a
particular revision numbers of hardware/software. There’ll be no upgrade
path. Even minor and totally irrelevant changes will invalidate support.
This ‘one night stand’ philosophy creates such a resentment that people get
an urge to move away soon as they have an opportunity. Not because this OS
is bad, but because they don’t want to deal with such a ‘partner’.
Perhaps the story is different if you’re a ‘tier 1 partner’. I’d guess Ted
was not one of them.
