Here is my problem. Have an old PC application (energy management software
on QNX 3.2.1) running on an old 386 based PC. The application install
floppies are bad, and are so old that we can’t buy replacements The old
PC is still running, but if the hard disk dies, I am looking at buying new
software for $4,000.
Ideally I would like to get an image of the old PC hard disk running under
vmware on a newer Pentium machine. I believe the issues of processor speed
and Y2K can be overcome. But how can I get the image created and running
under vmware? I put the old PC hard disk as a slave in the new Windows 2000
Pentium PC and it shows as drive E:. I can’t read the drive from Windows,
and Powerquest Drive Image 2002 warns me that the disk is not standard and
don’t muck with it. Is there a Windows driver that can enable access to the
QNX disk? Are there any Windows or DOS drive imaging programs that are able
to handle QNX format?
Any advice? I am not even sure how to boot QNX in the old PC and image it to
a spare drive. Getting this running under vmware looks to be more difficult
than I had imagined.
I don’t seem how you can do it, without first install QNX2 in VMware (using
standard install disk) and then copy via network the content of the HD from
the real PC to the virtual PC.
The other solution I can think of is installing QNX4 in VMware then plugin
the QNX2 HD and allow physical access to the disk (option in VMware) then I
beleive there is a utility available to copy QNX2 fs from QNX4. Thus you
could backup the QNX2 HD on the QNX4 HD.
If you install a third HD you might be able to copy the content of the
QNX2 hd to the third HD.

Better idea, just tell VMWARE to use the QNX2 HD as a virtual drive. When
you setup a virtual HD you can specify “physical access”. You should be
able to boot from it.
