Bootable/Install License Floppy

We are in a manufacturing environment and have a multitude of QNX licenses.
I would like to make a bootable/install floppy with all of the licenses
needed to speed up our installation process. If anyone knows how to make
this disk please advise. Thanks

I think you need to supply more detail.
Are the PCs networked?
It may not be a good idea to have all licenses on all machines…

I want to make one disk that can be inserted during the QNX installation
that will have all the licenses we need for a 5 node system. We use 4 PC104
computers and one host on our product. When loading the host as well as the
nodes I want to avoid having to put a multitude of floppies in for the
licenses. Obviously there is something special about the license disks
because they can not simply be copied onto a formatted QNX floppy.

Asssuming that you are talking about old style licenses (licenses in
the /etc/licenses directory instead of the /.licneses file), then

  1. put a blank floppy into the floppy drive
  2. license /etc/licenses /dev/fd0

I would dcheck the floppy first to make sure it’s OK.

No. I am sorry that I was not more specific. This would be new style
licenses located in the /.licenses file.

In that case, “/.licenses” is a text file; simply catenate all the
licenses you have into the one file located on the floppy…

True enough however this floppy is not recognized at the time that the
embedded version (6 floppies) of QNX or the CD version asks for the license
disk. Something is unique about these particular disks. It would seem that
there should be a way to at least backup your original license disks.

We are doing the installation following way (a little bit different
approach)

  • installation boot floppy with needed filesystem drivers and /.licenses
including all new style licenses as well as /etc/licenses including all old
    style licenses
  • installation media (magneto-optical disk/disk) containing the compressed
tar of the entire QNX4 partition (or partitions)
  • boot and mount the drives
  • install the partition(s)
  • copy new style license file from the floppy
  • license all old style licenses from /etc/licenses on the floppy
  • configure the node (e.g. copy the correct /.boot from /boot/images)

This works (assuming you have correct drivers on the boot floppy) but it’s
not exactly the way you are installing. Anyway, cp and license commands
move nicely the licenses. I think I have about the same experience that the
installation program on CD doesn’t accept self-made license floppies having
multiline /.license, but I didn’t test very much with them.

BTW: I think there is no hope to have Fsys.aha8scsi recognized by disktrap?

Assuming that your floppy is QNX formatted, try:

to create your license floppy

mount /dev/fd0 /fd0

cat /fd0/.licenses >> /tmp/.licenses

# do the above line for each floppy, then

cp /tmp/.licenses /fd0/.licenses

to use the license floppy

cat /fd0/.licenses >> /.licenses

Depending on your application, making your own installation
disk(s) would be better and possibly easier.
You can do this from CD too. You can then also have all
the licenses on the disk or CD.

If not, how about doing the standard installation first,
and then copy the licences separately (ie don’t install
licenses during installation).
If it’s a “new style” license, you can just copy that
over after the fact.

Old style license disks just write out license information without the
benefit of a standard directory structure. The license utility knows
how to read them.

You may notice that the install disks use the vol command to read the
multi-volume archive. They also use an argument that reserves the
first sector of the disk. That is where the license information is
stored.

The new style licenses are much simpler to use. They are just a text
file where each line represents one license. Use any text processing
method you like to copy them.

The two problems with this approach is:

  1. We are having the “average Joe” off the street installing the OS. This is
    a manufacturing environment.
  2. We must load 4 PC104 computers with the five floppies as well as two
additional ones that contain certain scripts and boot images.

If I take one of the original license disks from QNX and try to read it,
mount it or even edit it, I can not. Could it be perhaps that the license
disks are have not been initialized?
