Porting a French application to Chinese

Hello.

We would like to port a QNX application currently in French into Chinese.

Could someone give us a hint about the requirements to do so, such as :

  • constraints on character set to be used in strings displayed
  • supplements to install on the target OS (QNX in chinese)

If someone has experience on porting application from a Western codeset to
Chinese, we would appreciate some guidance.
Many thanks.

Eric

What version of QNX? Are you using Photon? General rules, Photon supports
internationalization … there is an internationalization chapter in the
Photon docs … strings have to be in UTF-8 … and just as important, the
sizes will vary … if all your french is in 9 point text, well, it won’t
work too well, because Asian fonts are pretty unreadable at that size …
minimum is 14 or 16 point, one font foundry doesn’t guarantee glyph quality
below 24 point (extreme case) … so what does this mean? If the app
doesn’t resize automajically using anchors and such, you will have to
manually adjust the interface … with Chinese there is also Simplified vs.
Traditional scripting, and Hong Kong (Traditional with some more symbols)
meaning, say we take a unicode glyph 0x7b07 … it will look different if
you are catering to traditional or simplified audiences, even though it’s at
the same unicode code point …

later,
D.
