QNX 4.25E Hard-Drive Limits

Hello,

Does anyone know if there are any any Hard-Drive size limits with QNX
4.25? Or partition size limits??

Thanks,

Delia

Yes there are.

IIRC, partition size is limitted to either 1 terabyte or 2 terabytes.
(It is either int_max 512 byte blocks, or unsigned int max 512 byte
blocks.)

The disk size is, also, so limitted.

BUT, for the world of IDE, there may be further limits to disk
size, due to the ongoing changes in the “spec” for how heads/tracks/
sectors/cylinders are named/numbered in the IDE world, and how to
interpret BIOS/disk descriptions of this. I don’t know what/where
this limit currently lies.

AFAIK this is a limitation of your BIOS, so it depends on your hardware.

I’m pretty sure there are limitations/assumptions in our driver(s) as
well.

I know we’ve had to recode drivers for at least a couple different
IDE reinterpretations along the way.

Yeah, like IDE limits of 800MB, 2GB, 8GB, 32GB, 128GB, … and then there’s the crap with bootloaders having to deal with CHS numbers and partition tables only having four entires … these were so obviously limited even from day one.

Am I aggravated? You betcha!

Not to mention that SCSI naturally caters for bootable portable external drives right back to the early eighties and here we now have a thriving USB removable drive industry that still struggles with booting … gee, only took 20 years of sidelining … what gives?

Using FDISK, you will find that QNX 4.25 partitions are usually limited to
8Gb.
(Have done this a couple of times lately…)
