Beginner needs help

Hello,

Maybe its stupid question, but I can’t get any ideas where to find answer.
Please help. I have downloaded XFree for QNX. I have found some libraries,
include files, binaries and something else in the package and I have no idea
how to install XFree. I think I must compile the package, but there is no
readme, there is no src or similar folder and there is no nothing who can
help me understand what to do with the package. Maybe someone knows how to
deal with this type of programs who come with libraries and inlude files
with no src or readme. I need help very much. Thank you.

Best regards,
Darius

Hello,

I have found Xinstall.sh file in the distribution, but this install script
do not work. I use “sh Xinstall.sh” and I can see Xinstall.sh file’s
contents, but no actions are taken. I’m completely lost. Please help.

Darius

Step one: Delete it. Clearly, you are not ready to replace Photon with
XFree.

Step two: Grab XPhoton from the public repository. That provides an
X11 layer on top of Photon for X apps to use.

How to be ready? Seems nothing is working. Xinstall.sh script do not work,

Lots of hard work learning the nature of unix systems.

How to be ready? Seems nothing is working. Xinstall.sh script do not work,
install readme file is written for original XFree distribution and this is
QNX version of XFree and seem it is a little bit different (one tar
archive).

I need to use XFree.

Hello,

Lots of hard work learning the nature of unix systems.

Think its not about low knowledge about QNX. I understant something about
UNIX shell programming and I have install shell script with Xfree86, but
this script isn’t working. Maybe I do not know some parameters, or maybe it
needs to be modified. Its not about UNIX or QNX its about XFree. And I can
read all UNIX books, but I think it will be still unclear how to install
XFree for QNX. So I’m asking maybe someone has installed XFree on QNX using
shell script? MAybe you have some advices?

Nope.

Hi Darius…

Why do you need to use XFree? If you absolutely must, why not go to
Linux then? QNX is best suited for embedded applications, and those do
not use a GUI interface at all (most of the time).

Regards…

Miguel.

I need X only for X terminal but this is not the point. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND
why Xinstall.sh is not working under QNX shell, but seems nobody can tell
me. I can easy install XFree from repository CD with no problems, but I only
want to know and LEARN. I agree with you that QNX is for embedded
applications and I intend to use it for this purpose, but want to have
general knowledge about all system, including using it. I think it is not
enough to read system architecture and programmers guide to understand all
thing. Think I need to learn use it a little bit.

This is not a beginner subject. It took noc’s (www.openqnx.com)
experience in dealing with the many linux/bsd ports to answer your
questions.

As for embedded use, I consider Photon to be a major plus for QNX.
Having a built-in operator panel that can be trusted not to interfere
with real time code can save a lot of money.

I’m very thankful for his answer.

I need Xfree for XTerminal to have an ability to connect to QNX computer
over the network to develop apps, becouse now I’m using NC version and
consider to buy PRO. The target apps will be running without any graphical
interface. I will use QNX for high speed analog data acquisition. But I
think some experience about using QNX is very good start to program.

I am not sure what an XTerm will give you that QNX NC does not have?
QNX has the pterm terminals, are these not sufficient? I am curious now.

There is a world of difference between the NC running XFree and family,
and QNX Pro using Momentics IDE with all the associated plugins.

Did you take a look at RK’s books (www.parse.com)? He has an example of
an A/D application, and it is my understanding that he does not use an
IDE for his development (i.e. you may not need QNX Pro). Should take a
look at RK’s books; they (along with QNX online doc) will answer many of
your questions.

pterm is ok, but there is only command prompt. I need to use graphic
enviroment to connect to QNX from windows.

It sounds like what you want in Phindows, not XTerm.

Phindows allows you to display a QNX/Photon application on a Windows
desktop.

Hello,

Phindows allows you to display a QNX/Photon application on a Windows
desktop.

How? Somebody has explained me that this is possible only with PE, but I am
using NC, so I think I need Xterm.

Ah, I get it now.

Your right, Phindows may not be available with the NC version.

But XTerm is NOT a substitute for it. While XTerm kind of serves a
similar purpose, XTerm is for the X-Windows protocol. It will NOT render
Photon apps to an XTerm screen.

Hello,

Phindows ARE available with NC version. So what sould I use as terminal
server so as I can connect to photon from windows? what client should I use
on client (Windows) side?

phindows.exe

You could just look up the docs for phindows.

phindows is the Windoze client
phditto is the QNX client
phrelay is the QNX server

Dunno, if it’s not with the standard QNX 6.3.0 install then maybe it’s
in a TDK.
