Momentics (6.2) on QNX4 file system

Hi,

I have a partition (3 GB) for QNX 4 and I
would know how to install QNX 6.2 on this
partition ? I want to use (keep) QNX 4
and try QNX 6.2 .

In my disk I have 2 other partitions : Linux
and Windows.

Thanks.

Installing QNX6 will replace QNX4 if on the
same partition. You would need either a
new partition, or a second disk.

QNX 6 will install to a partition type of 79. QNX 4 defaults to a partition
type of 77. So there won’t be any conflictions when the installer creates
the partition for QNX 6.

Thanks for your reply Joe,

But I can’t create a new partition on my
disk. Can I put on the same partition : QNX 4 (3GB)
and QNX 6, the selection could be done with
the /.boot and the /.altboot, or something like that ?

I have only free space in the extended area.

No, you will have to install to a separate partition.

Well, it is theoretically possible that you could create a
boot image for Neutrino that would boot from /.altboot while
booting QNX 4 from /.boot. Problem is, to build this you
would have to install a development system, and carefully
create an image, and probably copy a bunch of Neutrino utilities
to a particular sub-directory of the QNX filesystem, and search
that, or prefix it to the appropriate place as part of the
boot process. It could be done, it just gets quite messy to
setup properly. And, there is absolutely no install support
for that sort of configuration.

I have only free space in the extended area.

I was going to suggest resizing the windows partition to make space
for a 4th partition for QNX6, but this suggests you have 3 primary
partitions (QNX4, Windows, Linux boot?) and the 4th slot is an
extended partition. So, that idea is out, too.

I’m pretty sure we don’t/can’t install to/boot from an extended
partition.

Can you throw a 2nd disk onto the machine, and install QNX to a
partition on the 2nd disk? I’m pretty sure our installer & our
primary loader support that. Dunno what you’re using to boot,
though (QNX4 primary loader? LILO? Grub? I know the QNX4 one
doesn’t support 2nd drive boots, dunno about LILO or Grub, the
QNX 6 does, I think, do so.)
