Does anyone know how to prevent momentics from automatically building when
I hit save? I cannot for the life of me find a way to turn this option
off…

Just seen it…
If anyone else needs to it is in Windows → preferences.
And when you turn it off, you may want to turn on the one right
beside it that says “save on manual build”.
