FTP slows and stops

I have a QNX ftp client, trying to download a 15mb file from a Windows 2000
server, in binary mode. The network link shows 50% packet loss when I ping
from the QNX to the Windows machine, using 2048 byte packets. When I start
the transfer, it sputters along for about 20 minutes at a slow pace, but
then grinds to a complete halt, never to restart.

Now, I understand that the real problem is the packet loss, but what I don’t
understand is why the transfer doesn’t just continue to sputter along at the
reduced rate that it started out at. My guess is that some kind adaptive
algorithm is at work here, trying to compensate for the packet loss, but
that’s just a shot in the dark. Another idea is that one side gives up on
the transfer, but the other side never hears about it.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

What do you see with “netstat -a”?

May be you’ve ran out of free ports? What if each re-try was made in the separate TCP session and at certain moment all the ports are exhausted…

Tony.

What network adapter are you using and what is the version of the driver?
The output of ‘show_pci -v’ as well as a ‘sin ver’ would help. Also post the
output from netinfo.

Here you go.

Interestingly, if I do the transfer using Kermit in “robust” mode, it does
what I want. That is, it completes the transfer, although it is very, very
slow. Also, ftp works just fine at other, identically-equipped sites that do
not have the packet loss problem. It is just at this one site, a toll plaza
with four lanes, that I have the ftp trouble, and it affects all four lanes.
My feeling now is that this is a quirk of ftp, where one side is giving up,
but the other side never figures it out.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Kevin,
I had a similar problem a few years ago. Try ‘relaxing’ the network
timeouts in Dev.net. My situation was trying to ftp files over a wan
using b-routers and the timeouts were marginal with all the links involved.

What network adapter are you using and what is the version of the driver?
The output of ‘show_pci -v’ as well as a ‘sin ver’ would help. Also post

the

output from netinfo.

“Kevin Miller” <> kevin.miller@transcore.com> > wrote in message
news:cf8gb0$2p3$> 1@inn.qnx.com> …

I have a QNX ftp client, trying to download a 15mb file from a Windows

2000

server, in binary mode. The network link shows 50% packet loss when I

ping

from the QNX to the Windows machine, using 2048 byte packets. When I

start

the transfer, it sputters along for about 20 minutes at a slow pace, but
then grinds to a complete halt, never to restart.

Now, I understand that the real problem is the packet loss, but what I

don’t

understand is why the transfer doesn’t just continue to sputter along at

the

reduced rate that it started out at. My guess is that some kind adaptive
algorithm is at work here, trying to compensate for the packet loss, but
that’s just a shot in the dark. Another idea is that one side gives up

on

the transfer, but the other side never hears about it.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

\

Have you tried other network cards to try and eliminate the problem?

“Kevin Miller” <kevin.miller@transcore.com> wrote in message
news:cfav9b$sdr$1@inn.qnx.com

Here you go.

Interestingly, if I do the transfer using Kermit in “robust” mode, it does
what I want. That is, it completes the transfer, although it is very, very
slow. Also, ftp works just fine at other, identically-equipped sites that
do
not have the packet loss problem. It is just at this one site, a toll
plaza
with four lanes, that I have the ftp trouble, and it affects all four
lanes.
My feeling now is that this is a quirk of ftp, where one side is giving
up,
but the other side never figures it out.

What network adapter are you using and what is the version of the
driver?
The output of ‘show_pci -v’ as well as a ‘sin ver’ would help. Also post
the
output from netinfo.

“Kevin Miller” <> kevin.miller@transcore.com> > wrote in message
news:cf8gb0$2p3$> 1@inn.qnx.com> …
I have a QNX ftp client, trying to download a 15mb file from a Windows
2000
server, in binary mode. The network link shows 50% packet loss when I
ping
from the QNX to the Windows machine, using 2048 byte packets. When I
start
the transfer, it sputters along for about 20 minutes at a slow pace,
but
then grinds to a complete halt, never to restart.

Now, I understand that the real problem is the packet loss, but what I
don’t
understand is why the transfer doesn’t just continue to sputter along
at
the
reduced rate that it started out at. My guess is that some kind
adaptive
algorithm is at work here, trying to compensate for the packet loss,
but
that’s just a shot in the dark. Another idea is that one side gives up
on
the transfer, but the other side never hears about it.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin
