Geode: Is it compatible with QNX4?

Is it OK to buy Geode-based IPC with Realtek RTL8100B 10/100 to use under QNX v4.25G?

Or it’s better to stay with Intel?
Is Intel 82559ER 10/100Mbps Ethernet chip known to QNX v4.25G?

Tony.

They should both work. The RTL 8100 is supposedly 8139 compatible and the
82559 should work with the Net.ether82557 driver.

IMHO, Geode based systems tend to underperform and exhibit behaviour
which isn’t in line with expectations. Things like video etc are all
implemented via SMI and cause big headaches in terms of interrupt
latency etc.

Thank you for the answer.

My project does not depend on video adaptor at all. I either connect to the box via SSH or “ditto” to it by FLEET.
So, I’m safe, ain’t I?

Tony.

Could you advise Advantec’s PCA-6753?

I only gave video as an example - much of the peripheral support is done
the same way (audio is another one). You’ll have to evaluate it to
determine if it’s ok for you. But from my experience the Geode has
tended to be underpowered.

You haven’t really said what you’re going to be doing on this board. If
it’s just a box to telnet/ssh to and perhaps some storage, then sure the
Geode will be fine. If you’re going to be doing things involving
deadlines and/or strict tolerances, it probably isn’t going to be the best.

The box is a sort of “data convertor”, it accepts network connections via SSH and after the data files are loaded in it - it converts and outputs the data via our custom adatpors (IRQ driven) to other media.
So, no video, no sound, just a few IRQ sources - NIC and our’s one~two.

Then I would read the Geode specs to see if any of the resources you
will use are implemented via SMI. Then do some evaluation on the board
to see if it meets your needs.

We use PCA-6751 and they work very well for us.

Yes, we too used the Advantech’s products with no headache at all, but now one of the customers wants to have it cheaper…

EtherNet chip Intel 82551ER or 82551QM - are they known to QNX v4.25G?
