QNX Newsletter - QNX only for Embedded Systems??

Hello,

after Dan confirmed at the QNX-Night 2005 that he is also much
interested in the Industrial Automation market I’ve no idea when reading
the welcome line in the QNX-Newsletter:

"Welcome to QNX Source, your monthly update on how QNX Software Systems
can help you create reliable, scalable, and high-performance embedded
systems. "

The IA market for QNX is shrinking and who should decide for QNX in IA
when only EMBEDDED SYSTEMS are pointed out… ??

I would like to see here a public statement from QSSL

Well what every they say doesn’t really matter, it’s what they do or don’t
that matters.

sure, but I know that QSS Germany is active in Industrial Automation
market, too.
The real problem I see is that it’s hard to get new (and keep old) IA
customers when the public attitude of QSSL is only towards Embedded
Systems :frowning:(

Notice, no other RTOS has the flexibility to support the PC platform in
the way how QNX does!

It’s a shame that the marketing of QSSL is not interested in IA :frowning:

So maybe QNX is becoming just like the other RTOS.

By the definition of “embedded system” almost all IA applications are
embedded systems. The term “embedded system” doesn’t preclude any
platform (including PCs). It simply means that the system in question
is not “general purpose” computing, but “special purpose” computing, and
a component of a larger system. This is a definition which almost all
IA applications conform to.

I am not making any statement as to whether QSSL is supporting IA or
not, simply commenting that IA is included in the definition of embedded
systems.

… but these embedded computer systems doesn’t have a user interface
like a general purpose system.

The IBM PC (XT, AT) was never never used in that sense as an embeded
system … so I don’t see the 25 years of ‘embedded systems’ and QNX.

The embedded PCs are primarely based on chip sets like ElanSC300, which
comes out 1996!!

The intuitive understanding of the term ‘embedded system’ is also very
different to your definition.

IMHO … it makes no sense to narrow the area of applications of QNX to
embedded systems. It has a lot of desktop features which other real-time
operating systems can’t deliver!

Sadly, they do not consider an el-cheapo PC as a suitable target. Things like interrupt sharing is a big sin in QSSes eyes.

Just had to get in another dig …
