New problem with entries in /dev

Hi,

despite of the number of /dev entries (Dev -n) there seems to be
an additional character limit. After I had restored all mounts,
(see my post “Limit of entries in /dev”) /dev/hd1t78.2 seemed to
be truncated to /dev/hd1t when I looked at it with “ls /dev”, but
with “ls /dev/hd1t78.2” it was there!!!
I have experimented with mounts and umounts. The result is, that
in /dev there are never shown more than 487 characters!!! Against
which ‘magic limit’ do I bang here? Please help!

Regards from Hamburg
Jochen

Can you try “ls /dev | more”?

Tony.

there is no difference between the results of “ls /dev | more” and
“ls /dev”: entries above the 487 character limit are truncated or
omitted.

No. There is a total limit on prefix strings (try “prefix | wc” and
how many is that?). The limit is 4000 bytes, and the default is the
max (see Proc -r I think). If your total prefix lengths are near that,
I guess that might be suspicious … ?

thanks John. The current prefix length ist 861 bytes. According to
helpviewer the default in Proc32 is 2000 bytes. I’ll play with the
-r option and tell the result here.

no change when boosting the prefix length to 4000. Any additional idea?
