Hangs with blank screen when trying to boot from hard disk

I was able to use the F10 option to force a partition install. I’m
using a Digital-Logic MSMP3SEG PC/104 board with a 700 MHz Pentium 3
processor. I’ve got a 40GB Fujitsu disk as the only thing on the IDE
bus. I did the software install from a USB CD-ROM drive using the
6.3.0-qnx6-200405141702.iso image. The Phoenix BIOS on that board is
copyright “1980 something” to 2001. The BIOS has a boot option for a
“DOS” or “Other” partition and I’ve tried both. I’ve also tried using
the whole disk as QNX and “keep the QNX partition under 8GB” (or
whatever the limit is.)

I get to the point where I give it the license key and it evidently
installs QNX on the hard disk. It says that it is restarting the
drivers. It then complains about not being able to mount the cdrom
drive on a particular device (I think /dev/cd) and it asks me to remove
the distribution media and reboot. I then take the bootable CD out of
the USB CD-ROM drive and power cycle everything to reboot. It goes
through the BIOS screens and eventually ends up sitting at a blank screen.

Hello Will

It hangs because it didn’t actually install the OS. It’s because you
can’t install QNX (currently) using a USB CD-ROM. Do you have an IDE
CDROM drive that you can hook up to this machine? Or do you have
another machine that you can put the hard drive in to, install the OS on
to it and then move it to the Digital-Logic machine?

Thanks,
Rodney

Doh! :sunglasses: I’ve torn apart the scrap laptops and desktop machines I’ve
got and can’t find anything that will handle that Fujitsu drive. 8(

The single board computer does have a compact flash card interface.
Could I get a compact flash card with a PCMCIA adapter and throw the QNX
distribution onto that with a laptop? And then boot the SBC from the
compact flash card to install QNX on the hard disk?
Thanks,
Will

Another big Doh! :sunglasses: I was able to swap the hard drive with the hard
drive in an old laptop. I then used the laptop to do the initial
install onto the soon-to-be-QNX disk. When that install wanted me to
power down to reboot I moved the disk over to the SBC. That process
seems to have worked and I was able to get into the GUI on the SBC.

Hello Will

Sounds like it installed fine. Moving the hard disk shouldn’t cause any
problems.

Thanks,
Rodney
