Can QNX 6.3 access 15GB hard disk space ?

I am thinking of putting QNX and WinXP on a x86 system. How much hard drive space can QNX 6.3 access ? Is there any limit ? I just
want to know what size to set the partitions at for QNX. It is an 80GB HD. I was thinking 15 GB for QNX.

Thanks !

I’m not sure what the limit is but works fine on a 80gig partition.

I think the limit is that of the IDE standard.

Thanks !

It normally is a limitation of your BIOS.
If your BIOS supports extended INT 13 requests then it should normally
be no problem to use large disks.

I just built up a new development PC here for QNX 6.3 SP2, and it’s
built on a 200 GB drive, with the QNX 6.3 partition sized to 100 GB.

No problems.

Agreed.

They do make a couple of faux pas though:

1 - They’re using the metric measurement for K meaning 1000 instead of the “borrowed” computing measurement for K meaning 1024. It’s not a good idea to get them mixed up and it’s certainly not a good idea to attempt to metricate binary. After all, why is hexadecimal in use if it wasn’t to make binary more readable.

2 - At the start they make broad gestures about computer history but are, in fact, just referring to PC history and more often than not just M$ history. They fail, in the history, to recognise that BIOS is often not used once the drivers are loaded for most OSes, even listing the Mac and Linux as being BIOS dependent - suggesting that everyone had the same nightmares as the M$ fans had. I don’t think they acknowledged older OSes not having any knowledge of LBA48 either, historical or not. Nor do they recognise any addressing that is pure block based but instead are still babbling about cylinders right to the end even though LBA has always been a block based addressing system.

Evan

They don’t seem to make any distinction between bootblock code and driver code either.

So the conclusion for QNX is it fully supports LBA48? And the limit is from the chipset and BIOS as to whether a large HDD will be bootable beyond 128 GB or maybe 64 GB depending on the BIOS.

I did nothing special - just installed from the downloaded QNX 6.3.0 CD
image. It recognized the size of the drive, and when it asked if I wanted
100%, 50%, etc. I told it 100%, and off it went installing. Boots fine,
runs fine.

‘df -kP /root’ shows the appropriate amount of free disk.

I’ve since installed the SP2 upgrade, 6.3.2 Neutrino Core patch, and
added the complete documentation.

I just re-did this exercise, to use all 200 GB of the drive rather than just
100 GB.
(Original plan was to install QNX 6.3 and QNX 6.1 as dual boot, but that
seems
not practical). No problem, works fine with QNX 6.3 SP2 on a 200 GB
partition.
