Here’s what it says in the Using the Photon microGUI chapter of the

If you just want to close the shelf in your current Photon session, you
can shut it down it using shelf -e.
A more permanent approach is to set the PHSHELF_DISABLE environment
variable to 1. You can do this in your .profile file, with:
