StarOffice 5.2 under RTP ?

Just curious… Does anyone managed to have StarOffice 5.2 running under RTP
? Perhaps w/ lxrun ??

There was an attempt to port it made by some russian hackers, but
apparently they ran into trouble. Some version was available for
download, but has been removed later. QSSL works on tehir own port, but
it does not appear to be high priority at this time.

I thought that it was only going opensource after Oct 13th. Is there
source available for it now?

Hmm, I thought mighty Colin is working on it, but he’s just waiting for
source to appear
You can get source for SCO at
http://www.sco.com/skunkware/uw7/emulators/lxrun/src/

The official homepage is at California’s Institute of Technology, but
the whole site appeared to be down when I tried… See
http://www.sco.com/skunkware/emulators/#lxrun for links.

I took time to read lxrun white paper and it looks like port would be
much better done by QNX itself than by 3rd parties, given the intention
of lxrun maintainers to switch to direct execution of Linux binaries.
They want to get rid of SIGSEGV catching to improve performance, by
preloading ‘linux program interpreter’ which would catch and map
syscalls before they cause SIGSEGV (if binary wants ld-linux.so then it
sure needs to be served). They also want to get rid of lxrun front-end,
by using ld-linux.so directly, but that requires lot of trickery to be
done when it is loaded, unless all dependencies can be resolved
statically and ld-linux.so could be made real executable instead of
shared object.

I guess there will be some NTO specific trickery involved to handle tty
stuff and ioctls. Lxrun seems to rely on major device numbers to track
ioctls, but they don’t mean much in NTO…

If all that is done then installation & execution of Linux binaries
would be smooth enough for end-users to not bother with configuration
mess.

Oh, I was talking about StarOffice, not lxrun.

The site says that it takes 18 hours to build on Windows. Sorry guys,
I really don’t need a wordprocessor that badly!

It also needs the JDK 1.2.2, Steve Furr may want to comment on whether
that is possible?

After reading some docs it looks like StarOffice could be ‘photonized’
with reasonable amount of efforts. They have relatively thin OS/GUI
abstraction layer. They render their own widget set using only very
primitive drawing features of GUI. Mighty Colin would not give up such
opportunity, would he?

A real set of Desktop Apps would be a nice addition to the RTP! Start
giving Linux a run for the money and you may have something.

I got a friend who is a developer of StarOffice …
Sent him a email poking him about mybe doing a QNX port.

We will see what his boss has to say …

ps. yes he works at SUN

Isn’t Star Office in Java?

So, would have to wait for Java support?

There is Java version, but originally it is in C++.
And btw Java for RTP is available from IBM, although it does not claim
to be fully Sun compliant.

Absolutely, totally wrong; the IBM java implementation for RtP does have the
AWT, I have written several utilities with it using the AWT. I have grabbed
stuff of the web that requires an AWT and run it without error.

Excuse, me, Armin. On what basis do you conclude that it has no AWT?

In the download section of the OTI home page are only offered IDEs
for LINUX or Windows and runtime platforms for e.g. different
Neutrino targets.

In my understanding is that a ‘runtime platform’ is just the
‘virtual JAVA machine’.

Would be nice to be completely wrong here  … is the AWT
included in the ‘runtime platform’ ???

ATW is an inherent part of Java runtime environment. It has nothing to
do with IDEs.
