For NEdit you have to install and run XPhoton.

BTW … SciTE is available at http://www.sf.net/projects/openqnx

In my opinion there isn’t a good programmer’s editor for QNX6.

It’s the single biggest shortfall as a development environment.

For the record, I use gvim. But I’m not thrilled with it.

I can thoroughly recommend Workspace, it’s the second best editor I’ve
used, the best being BBEdit on the Mac.

Cheers

Hi Garry…

I wonder, what makes a good editor?

Regards…

Miguel.

Hi Miguel,
Call me a n00b, but for me, it needs to be graphical. Syntax
highlighting is essential, a list of functions/classes/methods is almost
essential. I like to be able to open files from FTP, and full unicode
support is nice.

Simplicity is good too, an editor is an editor, and should not try to
manage your project/organise your workflow/make you microwave popcorn.

I think Workspace is really great, and I’m surprised it’s available for
such a niche platform as QNX, and if I were the author, I’d be charging
money for it…

Problem with charging money is people will expect the product to be
supported, author would have to exchange freedom for money >

And I guess to make it a commercial product might mean getting a
commercial licence to QNX, and the guy would be $8000 poorer…

Note: the author works at QSS which probably explain why it’s availble on
QNX >

I did’nt know that, might make getting a commercial license easier!

I did not know this. As I said earlier, I tried this editor. I liked it
a lot. But is does have a few problems.

Will QSSL support this editor? Please!!!

They really do need a decent editor for QNX6 and Workspace does come
close. I have exchanged a few e-mails with the author detailing the bugs
that I have found. Nothing ever came of it. I’d be happy to post them
here if they would get resolved.

Hi.

Just to add my voice to the FIRE…

The lack of a decent editor for QNX 6 is a major draw back. For the moment
I’m staying away from QNX 6… I can tell you the editor flop is one of the
major reasons.

Some one in charge at QSSL needs to listen to the developers and come up
with something better.

They do, they are working on QDE…

One wonder why 3rd party aren’t taking a stab at that opportunity… Hold
on, I know why, it simply doesn’t make business sense…

I don’t exactly know about that. I know an editor isn’t an expensive
program. But personally I’d pay Teg Green $100 for a QNX 6 vedit.
I’d probibly pay more than that but I wouldn’t be happy about it. I
miss vedit.

Don’t think I haven’t thought of it. But an editor isn’t my kind of
project. Besides, vedit is already a complete and polished product.
All that is needed is to port either the QNX4 version or the Linux
version to QNX6.

It may be that the Linux version would be easier to port.
I don’t know.

You could always write your own, and just port it around with you - at
least it would work the way you wanted to. Plus, if you sold it, you’d
get all the money from people buying the editor from you

I think my point keeps getting missed…

Say for example… you… sell apples… That is your main focus… If you
just sell apples… You are limited (no need for explanation here)… but if
you enhance your product with apple peelers, slicers, apple cider, etc,
etc… You will sell a lot more apples and a few other things as well… On
some of these you might make a little more profit… on others perhaps
not… but the point is you sell a lot more apples… your main focus… and
your clients are happier… etc… etc.

The same thing applies here… keep developers/users happy with what they
need… and the more product you will sell… A decent GUI editor with
syntax highlighting and other common features should be part of the QNX 6
hosted IDE.

We have a new project here coming up with potential large number of units
and it will be hard to pick QNX 6…

Just my opinion… I could be wrong…
